Notes and operating instructions for PDF software I use. See subpage for reviews of potential new PDF tools
Stamps are stored asPDF collections in user data: c:/documents and settings/Tim/Application Data/Adobe/Acrobat/7.0/stamps
My collections are signatures, chords, custom
In general:
PNG makes nice stamps, but transparent background doesn't seem to work. If I use file export rather than web optimizer, the screen zoom doesn't seem to matter.
JPG preserves size best (see note on fret graphics.cdr), but does not do transparent background
GIF preserves size and transparencies work, however, they are very low resolution. See notes under MSS
To make a stamp for a manuscript (MSS)
use the CorelDraw file in MSS/stamps
file export (not web image optimizer) from 100%
use GIF
NOT to png file (original scale doesn’t matter with export to png, but PNG does not work for transparent background).
Settings that seem to work best to keep the graphic from looking very low res

Do not downsample in PDF create.
Modify stamp transparency to 40 or 50% to see MSS words
It looks like the best way to go with free PDF apps is to use them for their individual features. That is, one may create best, another is good for mark-ups, etc. Adobe's PDF software is prohibitively expensive (and may not be the best anyway).

Good for creating PDF (print to PDF)
had to reinstall the new version on 8500 - 11/9/13
I think this crashed again the other day -- after new install? 1/23/14
installed free version 8/6/13 from Tracker Software, compare versions.
The paid version, $37.50,seems more like Acrobat Pro.

Good markups

no scan to PDF (pro)
Has a scan feature, but needs a scanner TWAIN driver to work (see VueScan)
http://www.hamrick.com/
a TWAIN driver for my old Epson scanner.
VueScan sends to PDF, so freeOCR would not be needed.
This is research software like Zotero (has some cool features that Z doesn't), largely organized around PDF research. Has mark-up tools.

Not sure if this is a good option. Has heavy-duty PDF organizing, but no (obvious) way to take notes
