HyperCam 2 is software that makes a movie (.avi) from a computer screen (with narration, if I'm using a microphone). It is handy to narrate a powerpoint. May also work for photo narration, training video, etc.
To make the file size small, define the screen area to be rather small, use more compression (85% seems to work), set frames per second low (like 2).
To operate
open the program
set screen area (tab)
on the AVI tab, set file location, compression, frames
Options tab has cool cursor stuff
Begin and end recording with F2 (or set a different hot key), F3 to pause
320x240 resolution. Plays AVI (XVID), WMV (non-encrypted), and FLV
Applian / replay software is actually trialware -- you have to buy it for it to work right.
Corel Video Studio on tab 3 (share) can convert/render to several video formats incl. WMV (30 and 15 fps), FLV. See "create video file" in the mid-screen pop-up menu.
10-18-12 -- used WMV 15 fps. Tried AVI in custom settings and it made a huge file.
This is freeware conversion software to create video that fits on the Sansa Fuze. It works very well, and makes the file sizes much smaller (for the 224x176 fuze screen size).
Notes:
the original capture AVI on Corwin's computer is a format that works well with video4fuze (when capturing VHS video digitized through the camcorder (7/11)
If original needs editing we have got more of a problem. See format notes under Corel Video Studio Pro (VSP).
7/10/11 for VHS capture:
VHS player to sony camcorder
camcorder playback > menu > vcr setup > av dv out = on
usb to Corwin's computer
import video
import to video4fuze from D5150
if editing is needed, use Corel VSP and save to WMV broadband before importing to video4fuze
7/10/11 to copy a (non-protected) DVD
use Corel VSP > 1. capture > import from digital media
after the file is imported, it can be converted directly by video4fuze
4/20/12
Download MHA into My Music
Use the Roxio Creator software. Audio CD (Easy Audio CD).
Click Add Music. Open the .m3u playlist for the desired disk (it will automatically load tracks in the correct order)
Click the big orange button to burn
Came with something. Roxio. Very confusing, overlapping little apps, but does quite a lot.
MyDVD
allows import of clips (movies) in a DVD menu, but does not play through all (must be selected)
MyDVD Express
Has a "no menu" option that plays clips strung together
BUT playback pauses between clips -- not great quality.
Videowave
in tutorial but doesn't seem to be in the package I have -- perhaps in full version
Looks like a standard editing program
How to Sync Folders Across Computers
SugarSync allows you to sync folders across multiple computers. For example, if you had a folder called “My Folder”, you could sync it from your Desktop computer to your Laptop computer. This will allow you to access and change the content of the folder from either of the computers.
If the folder initially exists only on one of your computers, SugarSync will copy the folder and its contents to the other computers. After that initial copy, SugarSync will keep the folders in sync – any changes you make on one computer are automatically synced to your other computers.
To sync folders across multiple computers, SugarSync Manager must be running on the computers you want to sync. You can install the SugarSync Manager on Macs and PC’s. This means you can sync a folder from a Mac to a PC or vice versa.
Once you have more than one computer running SugarSync, you can open the SugarSync Manager and click the Manage Sync Folders button. Then, select a Sync Folder on a different computer that you want to sync to the current computer. Once you click on the Sync Folder, you should see a “Sync” button to start the process. You’ll be able to pick the destination on the current computer.
For your convenience, SugarSync automatically creates a Sync Folder called Magic Briefcase, which is added to your computer in your Documents folder when you install the SugarSync Manager. This folder will automatically sync files across multiple computers with no setup required.
Support Chat 12/22/09
... Damarnath: Sure. Have you installed the SugarSync Manager on your computers?
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Yes, installed on 3. I have excluded some folders in MY DOCUMENTS and synced with MY DOCS on another computer. I would like to sync one of the excluded folders with the 3rd, but can't find it. That is, it doesn't show up in "select folder"
Damarnath: Let me know the name of the sub-folder.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: I think it doesn't matter which subfolders. When I click "add folders from this computer", none of MY DOCUMENTS shows up. I looked last night and I couldn't even find my docs under c:
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: So, it looks like once I exclude subfolders of a shared folder, I can no longer sync. It looks like I can't use subfolder exclusion if I want to later sync that subfolder somewhere else. Is that correct?
Damarnath: Yes. You are absolutely correct. You cannot sync the sub-folders of a parent folder separately when it's parent folder is already synced. Please unsync the folder and back the sub-folder and then sync the parent folder again.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Ok. So I thought perhaps I should not sync the entire MY DOCUMENTS. Instead, I will sync only the subfolders that I want so I can specify where they get synced.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Oh, so are you saying that I can sync a sub-folder, then the parent, as long as I sync the sub-folder first?
Damarnath: Yes. You have to first sync the sub-folder and then you can sync the main folder across different computers. The sub-folder will be automatically be excluded when you sync the main folder.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Oh, I see. When I rearrange all of this (unsyncing), will I end up with duplicate files on the second computer?
Damarnath: No, please make sure that the SugarSync Manager is Online while you are performing these operations and also access your files only on one computer at a time.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Or, I guess I should ask a different question, too. Say I rearrange my folder structure on the originating computer. How will that affect synced computers?
Damarnath: Whenever you sync files that are already on the other computer, SugarSync will just reconcile your files. It will not re-upload/re-download them.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Reconcile them into the rearranged folders, you mean. Correct?
Damarnath: Yes. You are absolutely right.
TIMOTHY WEBSTER: Thank you. If I decide later that I don't need a sub-folder synced, then exclude it, will the files be erased on the other computer?
Damarnath: The files will remain in your computer but they will not be backed up any more.

Hi all,
Apologies for the shameless promotion, but SugarSync's referral system can benefit both of us if you could use online backup, online file sharing, or want to keep duplicate files on multiple computers.
After losing several hard drives in the last few years, I've been researching online backup services. However, I think online synchronization is a better deal for me. You get online backup, but you can also synchronize between any number of computers or devices (so, for example, my desktop computer files are always duplicated on my laptop -- a change in one is copied to the other automatically). You can access all of your synchronized files online from any computer and share folders with others online (sharing photos with family, for example). I've been using it for a month or so, and it is very convenient. It is similar to Apple's mobileme (though cheaper and it suits my needs better), and several other well rated online backup and online sync services.
If you sign up with my referral, we both get additional storage. The only downsides I've found are: (1) it seems to slow down my old computer a bit at times, though it is easy to disable (then sync later), and (2) it does not yet sync Outlook .pst files (they say coming soon). It is easy to install, runs automatically, and has powerful customization. Contact me if you have questions or want to try a more complicated custom set up.

Apologies for the shameless promotion, but you might like this product. If you sign up, we both get extra 2G storage.
I've lost several hard drives in the last few years, so I've been looking into online backup. I found a synchonization product called SugarSync that costs about the same but has additional benefits that suit my needs:
files/folders are backed up online, automatically, and right away. You can also revert back to an earlier version of a file (Sugarsync keeps three old versions, and these don't count against your total storage allocation).
Sugarsync keeps copies synchronized on multiple computers. So, if you change a file on one computer, the change will show up (sometimes in moments) on the other synced computers automatically.
Online access. You can get your files from any computer over the internet (and changes are synced).
You can share folders with other people (again, granting access over the internet).
convenient, customizable, and reasonable cost (I got the 30 gig plan for $50/year) -- I've been using it for more than a month now
Here are some downsides:
initial sync takes a long time (like, a couple days)
there are some tricks if you want to do more complicated custom set ups (call me)
if you need to back up a huge amount of stuff and don't need sync, you may get a better deal with an "unlimited" single computer backup product (check products like Dropbox, Carbonite, Mozy, Mobileme, see consumersearch.com)
on my old computer I thought I noticed slower performance when big files were syncing (though it is easy to temporarily disable Sugarsync if you need to)
on 10/31/12 got an extra 2 GIG of storage by referring to:

Hi all,
There's nothing like spamming your friends -- I just "referred" you for a computer product that I use. It automatically makes backups of my files on the web so they are "safe," and it also automatically keeps the same files on my laptop and desktop (hence "sync" in sugarsync).
So my apologies if you have no interest. It is great software that you may want to use for backups, and they lured me into making 20 referrals by giving me additional free storage (which I really need, at least until I have time to clean out old files off my hard drive). In case you are interested, follow the link they sent and we both get bonus storage.

Reclaim Storage / Free Up Storage Space
Basically:
stop syncing a folder or subfolder (Manage Sync Folders > Exclude subfolders)
Permanently delete files from the Deleted Files folder (this is sort of like emptying the recycle bin)
Search customer support portal for these tips:
https://sugarsync.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/42/kw/reclaim%20storage
9/26/11 for a slab, use the floor tool (not the foundation -- foundation automatically puts in walls)
5/30/11 note: will not automatically update
5/30/11 note: phone inexplicably fails to connect at times -- it may be because it must be fully charged (it seems to try to charge through the USB sometimes rather than connecting)
There are inconsistencies in the program -- note the following in Personal Data > Contacts:
data on computer on left, phone displays on right
software does not automatically write or save
Computer
put businesses in "last name" with underscores "_" instead of spaces
use the business and home tabs for phone numbers (phone has only mobile, home, work, fax, pager, other -- computer scheme is different)
watch the sync settings on name order -- take the first option even though the phone is last, first. The sync can switch them around otherwise.
How to lock a header row: either lock specific rows or columns in one area by freezing panes (pane: A portion of the document window bounded by and separated from other portions by vertical or horizontal bars.), or create multiple worksheet areas that can scroll separately from each other by splitting panes.
in 2010
TO FREEZE (usually do this rather than split): select a row below the non-scrolling row. Tab View / Freeze Panes. To unfreeze click the arrow below Freeze Panes.
TO SPLIT:
To repeat a header row on printouts: page layout / print titles / (click to select row in "rows to repeat at top")
NOTE: the braindead version of Excel on my netbook doesn't support this feature. (Excel Starter)
To get non-scrolling (locked) title row, place cursor on first scrolling row (below locked row). View / Locked Titles. This only works in draft view.
PROBLEM: Quattro seems to import just fine unless there is a password on the file (as in my financial files). So I may want to look into getting a cheap version of excel on the 8500. -- 1/31/14
Firefox doesn't use "trusted sites" like IE. Type "about:permissions" in the URL line to see permissions for individual sites.
Firefox Sync -- to pair a device, get a pairing number from the unpaired device, then enter it onto the first synced device (8500). Xmarks just isn't working very well on the winXP box. Not sure what to do, since can't get firefox on iPad 11/9/13
