2/26/14 update: The 5150 (esp.) and 8500 are v. slow. It doesn't seem to affect the windows 7 computers so much. Here are instructions to delete:
Uninstall Norton Family client on Windows
Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
Type the following text, and then press Enter: appwiz.cpl
In the list of currently installed programs, click Norton Family, and then click Remove or Uninstall.
In the Norton Family window, type the parent email address and password, and then click Continue. If you forget your Norton Family account password, you can recover it. For more information, read the section Recover your Norton Family account password.
Click Next to confirm. Click Restart Now.
9/29/13 update
see Norton Forum. Crashed again on XP. To get the internet going again, end both NF processes from the task manager.
9/26/13 update
Looks like 5150 is working now. Did this (can't remember the order exactly)
followed instructions for a 8506,421 error in Norton (run NRT then NPE)
in safe mode with networking (f8 at startup)
ran glary utilities
used Norton Removal Tool to completely remove all Norton products
ran norton system scan on 360
ran NPE, Norton Power Eraser (which interrupted some of the scan
reloaded Norton 360 (requires deactivating and then reactivating license) and Norton Family (have to restart)
9/25/13 update
called Norton support 800-745-6034
The Norton Management error 8504,104 is a connectivity error (5150 eventually crashing so badly browsers and internet 360 stopped working)
First, reboot computer into safe mode (press F8 repeatedly during startup), then boot "safe mode with networking" so I can get on internet
open browser, go to norton.com/NPE (for Norton Power Eraser)
Select "latest version" or "latest Beta version" to run
run the scan (middle one?) and repair errors it finds -- advanced something?
That took care of the problems on the Dell5150 -- need to try it on 8500 and perhaps netbook
Still not sure what caused this problem in the first place.
9/21/13 notes
One option is to reset firefox (but this loses all add-ons like xmarks)

try installing new driver. Troubleshooter says I have v8.23 and should try 10.6. It seems to be working, but added another background program.
Firefox still crashing. Did a complete uninstall with Glary and reinstalled. A 2011 site says Xmarks and Downloadhelper slow down FF startup.
