PDF of guide, Help site on Amazon
wrong file extension: http://www.pcworld.com/article/203369/Copy_Kindle_Notes_and_Bookmarks_to_Your_PC.html
3/6/13 notes files exist on the kindle with different extensions in different directories -- find the TXT version. I will need a WP macro or something to convert these to a usable format (the file lists notes by date, not by work, so I will have to reformat at use WP sort feature).
from How To
1. Point your browser to Amazon.com.
2. At the left edge of the search bar, click the little arrow next to All, then click Books.
3. At the other edge of the search bar, click Go.
4. Scroll down until you see Amazon Prime in the lefthand toolbar. Click the Prime Eligible box.

You can borrow one book at a time, 1x/ calendar month. You can deliver the book to other Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account. If already borrowed, prompted to return it before you can borrow a different book.
Note: Available titles may change each calendar month.
Bookmarks, notes, and highlights within the book saved to your Amazon account, available if you borrow or purchase the book later.

Access the Kindle Owners' Lending Library:
Kindle E Ink devices: Select All Categories, and then select Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

Eligible titles display the Prime badge.
When you've made your selection, select Borrow for Free.

Two ways to send stuff to the Kindle:
send it as an email attachment to webstert_56@kindle.com
use the Send to Kindle plugin (button upper right of Firefox). This works for some web pages (optimized for news sources I think), but see trick below for email.
To send an email (contents of an email) via Send to Kindle plug-in:
click on the "print email" icon gmail
cancel the small printer window (it will show a one page version of the email)
use the Send to Kindle button to upload the web page as a Kindle document. This mostly works -- formatting is a little off.
To send email contents via saved file (less convenient but better results):
click on the "print email" icon in gmail
cancel the small printer window
save the page in HTML (OR TEXT -- SEE BELOW)
send an email with this file as an attachment to webstert_56@kindle.com. This works very well, except that graphics are not included in HTML.
Note from Kindle 4/3/13 email:
The Kindle Personal Document Service can convert and deliver the following types of documents:
Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
Rich Text Format (.rtf)
HTML (.htm, .html)
Text (.txt) documents
Archived documents (zip , x-zip) and compressed archived documents
Mobi book
Images that are of type JPEGs (.jpg), GIFs (.gif), Bitmaps (.bmp), and PNG images (.png).
Adobe PDF (.pdf) documents are delivered without conversion to Kindle DX, Second Generation and Latest Generation Kindles.
Conversion of Adobe PDF (.pdf) to Kindle format is done on experimental basis.
9/27 Kindle's format is proprietary to Amazon called MOBI
3/13 -- I put Calibre on my ASUS netbook. Seemed to work fine to convert a book. It also has an entire "e-book management system"
Kindle uses a proprietary Amazon format, but EPub and other books can be converted into it.
Possible products to try:
Calibre -- several people recommend this

How to Read EPUB eBooks on Kindle
go to download site (see sub-pages)
download to c:/mydocuments/downloads - books
e-book may be attached to email (see send to Kindle above)
Kindle is on my Kindle, Ransom's iPad, BVA computer, and probably other computers.
See "send to Kindle" above to email
That seems to get them on the Kindle and iPad.
It seems to work to open the file with the Kindle app (but not from the app, only from file manager)
1/27/14 problem -- hard to sync collections. Some books are not showing up on BVA, though they do show up on Kindle and iPad
